Empowering Women in Cybersecurity: A New Initiative in Canada

September 6, 2023

In a concerted effort to bridge the gender gap in the field of cybersecurity, Canada is launching a groundbreaking training and certification program aimed at women and individuals who identify as women. This initiative, a collaboration between the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) and Microsoft, is set to provide participants with foundational cybersecurity training, mentorship, and hands-on work-integrated learning—all at no cost.

As the demand for cybersecurity professionals continues to escalate, with an estimated 25,000 unfilled positions across Canada, this program aims to inspire a new generation of female experts who can meet the industry’s needs. According to Karen Kabel, Associate Dean of Creative Arts and Applied Computer Education at RRC Polytech, the initiative is designed not only to educate but also to empower women to pursue successful careers in cybersecurity.

Addressing the Gender Gap

The cybersecurity sector has long been dominated by men, with women making up only a small fraction of the workforce. The shortage of female representation remains a pressing concern, as diverse teams are known to foster innovation and enhance problem-solving capabilities. "Women possess unique multitasking abilities and exceptional skills in stress management, making them a vital asset in this high-pressure industry," Kabel stated.

Kabel, who was recently recognized as one of Canada’s top women in cybersecurity, has been a tireless advocate for female inclusion in tech. “It’s crucial that we encourage young women to explore this career path, and this new pilot program is an incredible opportunity to inspire and support them at the same time,” she emphasized.

Program Highlights

The pilot program will recruit 20 students enrolled in RRC Polytech’s Information Technology programs. Participants will receive:

  • Foundational Cybersecurity Training: Comprehensive and structured learning tailored to the latest cybersecurity practices and technologies.
  • Mentorship: Guidance from experienced professionals in the industry, providing invaluable insights and support throughout the certification process.
  • Work-Integrated Learning: Opportunities for hands-on experience within the field, giving participants a competitive edge in the job market.

Through this initiative, Kabel and her colleagues aim to break down barriers and create a supportive community for women entering the cybersecurity landscape. With partnerships established and extensive resources allocated, the program looks to create a pathway to successful careers for its members.

A Call to Action

Kabel’s personal mission to enhance the representation of women in cybersecurity reflects a larger trend within the tech industry to promote diversity and inclusion. "As someone who has navigated this field and mentored other women, I can assure you that there is a wealth of opportunity out there," she said.

The new cybersecurity training program at RRC Polytech is not just about filling positions—it’s about cultivating a thriving ecosystem of empowered women who will ultimately shape the future of cybersecurity in Canada.

For more information about the ICTC and Microsoft Cybersecurity Training Pilot or to express interest in participating, potential candidates can reach out to RRC Polytech’s admissions office. This initiative promises to be a significant step forward in rectifying the gender imbalance and setting the stage for a robust, diverse cybersecurity workforce in Canada.
