New Cybersecurity Microcredential Program Launched Across Canada
In response to the escalating demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals, a groundbreaking collaboration has been announced between Seneca Polytechnic, Microsoft Canada, and Sobeys Inc. This initiative aims to bridge the significant gap in cybersecurity expertise in Canada by introducing an affordable series of short-term courses, or microcredentials, designed for aspiring cybersecurity analysts.
Understanding the Cybersecurity Skills Gap
According to the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), Canada currently faces a shortage of 25,000 cybersecurity professionals. As businesses and organizations navigate an increasingly complex digital landscape, the need for trained cybersecurity experts has never been more pressing. This new program is set to launch this fall, offering participants the essential skills required to pursue entry-level positions in the cybersecurity field.
Program Overview
The Cybersecurity Analyst (Stack) program consists of 11 stackable courses encompassing a broad spectrum of topics, including:
- Cryptography
- Network security
- Microsoft Azure fundamentals
- Security engineering
- Cyber threat hunting
- Incident response
- Information protection
Participants will have the opportunity to complete these courses within just 21 weeks for under $3,500. The program will include 162 class hours—90 hours of which will be dedicated to Microsoft certification training, supplemented by 100 hours of lab access conducted by expert faculty from Seneca Polytechnic.
Designed with working professionals in mind, the program offers flexibility by allowing students to learn at their own pace, with live sessions scheduled during evenings to accommodate participants across various time zones in Canada.
Who Can Apply?
The program is open to IT professionals holding a Network+ or Cisco Certified Network Associate certificate or those who can pass a network skills assessment. Additionally, candidates must have authorization to work in Canada, possess English proficiency at a postsecondary level, and exhibit a strong interest in transitioning into a cybersecurity career.
Industry-Endorsed Initiative
This innovative initiative has garnered praise from key stakeholders, including Marianne Marando, Vice-President of Academic and Students at Seneca Polytechnic, who expressed excitement about the partnership. “This stacked series of microcredentials, featuring internationally recognized Microsoft certifications, leverages Seneca’s expertise in cybersecurity education and will address the significant skills shortage across diverse sectors,” she stated.
Magdy Karam, Chief Learning Officer at Microsoft Canada, echoed this sentiment by noting the rapid growth in global demand for cybersecurity skills, which has surged by an average of 35 percent in the past year. He emphasized Microsoft’s commitment to empowering Canadians with the necessary skills to succeed in today’s digital economy.
Ragulan Sinnarajah, Vice-President of IT Shared Services and Head of Cybersecurity at Sobeys, highlighted the company’s dedication to community engagement and the mentorship opportunities that Sobeys’ cybersecurity team will provide to participants enrolled in the program.
Looking Ahead
As digital threats continue to evolve, equipping Canadians with the right skills in cybersecurity is crucial for ensuring the safety of information and systems across various sectors. The launch of the Cybersecurity Analyst (Stack) microcredential program promises to prepare the next generation of cybersecurity professionals, positioning them to meet the challenges of an increasingly interconnected world.
