Canada Strengthens Cybersecurity Workforce with New Certification Program
As cyber threats loom larger in an increasingly digital world, Canada is taking proactive steps to bolster its cybersecurity workforce. A new initiative, the SecureAcademy Program, has been launched in partnership with Check Point, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions. The program aims to equip post-secondary students across Canada with essential skills and knowledge to combat cybercrime, a growing concern for businesses and organizations nationwide.
With over 3.5 million cybersecurity positions unfilled across the globe, the urgency for trained professionals has never been clearer. Canadian organizations are not exempt from this trend; they are frequently targeted by cyberattacks that threaten their data, infrastructure, and reputation. The SecureAcademy Program was developed to address this critical skills gap, providing students with the tools necessary to thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity.
The SecureAcademy Program spans nine educational institutions, including renowned schools such as Sheridan College, Fanshawe College, George Brown College, and the University of Calgary. The collaboration includes comprehensive training and hands-on experience with Check Point technology, ensuring that students receive a robust education grounded in practical application. Learning tracks such as Certified Security Administrator, Certified Security Expert, and Cloud Specialist are designed to prepare students for immediate entry into the cybersecurity job market upon graduation.
The curriculum emphasizes key cybersecurity topics, including threat prevention, network security, endpoint security, cloud security, mobile security, and security management. By engaging with a cutting-edge curriculum, students are prepared to address the pressing cybersecurity challenges faced by Canadian organizations.
Cybersecurity experts—a combination of faculty and industry professionals—are actively involved in the pedagogical process to ensure that the programs remain relevant and effective. Cybersecurity instructors from partner institutions have expressed their enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasizing its importance in shaping future cybersecurity professionals.
Hamid Talebi, a Cybersecurity Instructor at British Columbia Institute of Technology, stated, “Our collaboration with Check Point’s SecureAcademy programming ensures that BCIT students are active participants in shaping the future cybersecurity landscape.” Similarly, Precious Affia, Vice President of Business and Technical Training College, stressed the importance of equipping students with cutting-edge training to prepare them for the emerging threats that Canadian organizations face.
With the growing dependence on technology in every sector, the need for a strong cybersecurity workforce has never been more evident. Dr. Dev Sainani, Associate Dean at Fanshawe College, noted the critical role their partnership with Check Point plays in enhancing their curriculum, saying, “Fanshawe students will receive cutting-edge skills to meet industry standards and fulfill the urgent need for cybersecurity experts.”
As Check Point continues to expand its SecureAcademy Program, hopes are high for a new generation of cybersecurity professionals who can safeguard Canadian businesses against evolving threats. Through partnerships with institutions like Sheridan College, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, and the University of Calgary, the program is poised to make a significant impact on the cybersecurity landscape in Canada.
As Canada takes steps to lead the charge in cybersecurity education, the future looks promising. The SecureAcademy Program is more than just an educational initiative; it symbolizes a commitment to strengthening Canada’s security landscape and preparing students to meet the challenges of tomorrow. With the global demand for cybersecurity professionals on the rise, Canada is on track to become a leader in cultivating skilled talent ready to tackle the world’s cybersecurity challenges head-on.
