Strengthening Canada’s Cybersecurity: New Google Cybersecurity Certification Program Launches in Québec

Date: January 25, 2024
Location: Montreal, Canada

In response to the growing cybersecurity threats affecting businesses and organizations across Canada, Google Canada has announced a pivotal initiative aimed at enhancing the cybersecurity skill set within the local workforce. The tech giant is set to launch the Google Cybersecurity Certificate in French, designed to prepare learners from around the globe for entry-level positions in the cybersecurity field.

This innovative online course, part of the Google Career Certificates program, offers a comprehensive curriculum intended to equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills, all in under six months—no prior experience required. The program is especially focused on francophone communities, ensuring accessibility and fostering inclusivity within the cybersecurity profession.

Accompanying this launch, Google.org has also pledged a significant $1.3 million grant to the Multidisciplinary Institute for Cybersecurity and Cyber Resilience (IMC2), a collaborative entity comprising Polytechnique Montréal, Université de Montréal, and HEC Montréal. This funding aims to bolster research and initiatives addressing rampant cyber threats that have increasingly targeted small and medium-sized enterprises in Québec—nearly 60% of which reported attacks in 2023 alone.

"Cybersecurity is not just a technical issue—it’s a societal one. At Google, we aim to actively participate in creating a cyber-resilient community by equipping individuals with the skills they need to protect themselves and their organizations," said Robert Shield, Google Montreal Co-Site Lead.

The alarming rise in cyber incidents has put pressure on many businesses in Québec to strengthen their cybersecurity strategies. A recent survey revealed that a staggering 65% of small and medium-sized enterprises lack the qualified personnel to implement effective cybersecurity measures or monitor potential threats. The Google Cybersecurity Certificate seeks to bridge this critical skills gap by training new professionals ready to take on such roles.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will not only receive a recognized certificate but will also gain access to an employer consortium, which includes notable companies such as Bell, Shopify, and Unilever. This network intends to facilitate job placements for graduates, thereby maximizing employment opportunities in a sector that is in desperate need of skilled workers.

In enhancing its community outreach, Google Canada will collaborate with non-profit organizations such as CyberQuebec, Hackfest, and Canada Learning Code to provide scholarships, ensuring that individuals from underserved communities can participate in the program at no cost.

As cybersecurity becomes ever more crucial in safeguarding personal and organizational data, the importance of initiatives like the Google Cybersecurity Certificate cannot be overstated. By empowering a new generation of cybersecurity professionals, Google aims to not only fortify local businesses but also contribute to a more secure digital landscape for all Canadians.

The initiative is expected to have a profound impact on the cybersecurity landscape in Québec and across Canada, driving forward the nation’s capacity to combat the evolving threats of the digital age.
