Canada Launches New Cybersecurity Certification Program to Tackle Skills Shortage

Posted: October 10, 2023

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the demand for cybersecurity professionals in Canada is reaching unprecedented heights. With an estimated 25,000 unfilled cybersecurity positions nationwide, a new initiative aims to bridge this critical skills gap and encourage greater diversity in the field.

The Cybersecurity Certification Pilot Program, in partnership with the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) and tech giants like Microsoft, has been launched to provide foundational cybersecurity training at no cost to aspiring female students in Canadian post-secondary institutions. This initiative seeks to recruit 20 women or individuals identifying as women from RRC Polytech’s Information Technology programs, offering them access to critical training, certification opportunities, and mentorship.

"Younger generations often lack sufficient exposure to cybersecurity concepts and career opportunities," says Karen Kabel, Associate Dean of Creative Arts and Applied Computer Education (ACE) at RRC Polytech. "This program not only aims to empower women but also emphasizes the importance of cybersecurity education from an early age. Our goal is to inspire confidence in these candidates, equipping them with the skills they need to navigate and contribute to this booming industry."

Emphasizing Diversity and Inclusion

The cybersecurity field has long struggled with a gender imbalance, with women accounting for only a fraction of the workforce. The new pilot program is an effort to change this narrative by emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives in cybersecurity roles. "Women bring unique problem-solving and multitasking abilities that are incredibly valuable in this sector," Kabel explains. "We need to showcase these strengths and create an environment that encourages women to pursue careers in technology."

The pilot program will offer students access to Microsoft Cybersecurity training and certification, experiential learning opportunities, and a robust mentorship framework. Participants will engage in hands-on training modules, working closely with industry professionals to gain real-world experience and insights into the cybersecurity landscape.

Addressing the Skills Gap

According to a recent report, the gap between available jobs and qualified candidates is widening, with cybersecurity positions being particularly affected. The new initiative not only aims to address this shortage but also focuses on preparing students for success in a dynamic job market.

“We believe that by supporting women in their pathways to certification and providing practical learning experiences, we will be able to fill some of these essential roles within the industry," says Kabel. “Collaboration between education and industry is critical to building a robust cybersecurity workforce.”

Looking to the Future

As the Cybersecurity Certification Pilot Program gets underway, it is becoming increasingly important for institutions, industry leaders, and government bodies to work together to foster education and awareness around cybersecurity careers. Kabel and her team aim to establish the program as a model for similar initiatives across the country, encouraging other educational institutions to implement strategies that promote diversity in tech fields.

"Increasing women’s representation in cybersecurity is not just about filling positions; it’s about building a safer, more secure digital world for everyone," Kabel adds.

As Canadian universities and colleges embrace initiatives like this, the hope is that a new generation of cybersecurity leaders will emerge, driving innovation and safeguarding the nation’s digital assets.
